Big Picture Learning Kenya

(BPL Kenya)

In the heart of Nairobi’s informal settlements, brilliance is everywhere. It is in the resourcefulness of a young person navigating a crowded market and the resilience of a family building a life from nothing. But for too many, that brilliance is met with a closed door.

In Kenya, the national secondary examination acts as a final gatekeeper. If you don't pass, the system tells you that your journey has ended. For a young person in Kibera or Kawangware, a single test score can lead to a lifetime of "invisible" labor, where their potential is ignored because they lack a piece of paper.

Big Picture Learning Kenya (BPL Kenya) was born to rewrite that story.

The visionary behind BPL Kenya

Carol Owala, grew up in those same streets. She sat in those same overcrowded desks and saw her peers labeled as failures before they even had a chance to begin. Alongside Samantha Nyabola—a veteran educator and counseling psychologist with 15 years of experience—she built an alternative: a bridge where the system saw only a wall.

That bridge where the system saw only a wall is the Kuna Nuru Leadership Academy.

Here, we don't just teach; we ignite. We move the classroom into the real world through a "learning through doing" model. Our students don't just study leadership; they practice it. They are embedded in real-world apprenticeships with expert mentors, building the social capital and professional networks that the exam system denies them. They work in small "families" called Advisories, where they are finally seen, heard, and supported.

The Kuna Nuru Leadership Academy serves as a transformative six-month lifeline, transitioning youth from the margins of society into the pulse of professional life. By anchoring every experience in their individual interests, we cultivate a professional spark from simple curiosity. Through the power of deep relationships and guidance from expert mentors, our students unearth the audacity to lead. This immersive path of constant practice commences with rigorous Classroom Summits, evolves into real-world Internships, and reaches its peak in Community Projects. Here, they demonstrate their mastery, finally converting untapped potential into a future defined by purpose and dignity. You see this transformation in Samantha, who arrived as a shy newcomer and is now a confident Salon Manager. You see it in Maina, who chose the path of a college student and provider over the risks of the street. And you see it in Abigail, a catalyst for justice who realized: "I am the leader I’ve been waiting for."
