A Farm Store for a More Sustainable Future

Help Mab's Haven turn the resources they already have into lasting income for the girls in their care.

At Mab's Haven Home for Girls in Zambia, Lloyd and Mable have created a safe and loving home for girls who need protection, stability, and the opportunity to build a better future. As the home grows and welcomes more girls, so does the ongoing cost of food, education, clothing, healthcare, staffing, and everyday care.

Like many of the children's homes World's Children partners with, consistent monthly income can be difficult to secure. Lloyd and Mable are thinking creatively about how to use the land and resources already available to them to generate income of their own.

Their next idea is a small farm store at the front of the Mab's Haven property.

Growing Food—and a Source of Income

Mab's Haven already has farmland with the potential to produce vegetables, eggs, and other goods. The farm store would give them a place to sell what they grow directly to the surrounding community, including:

  • Cabbage, tomatoes, chilies, and other fresh produce
  • Eggs and additional farm products
  • Ice blocks, particularly during Zambia's hot season
  • Other everyday essentials needed by nearby families

The store would be constructed using bricks made from ant hills found right on their property—a creative use of the resources already available to them. Funding would also help provide roofing, interior shelving, a freezer, solar panels to power the freezer, and lighting for the shop.

Meeting a Need in the Community

Although Mab's Haven is located away from the main road, Lloyd and Mable see the location as an opportunity.

There are currently no similar shops nearby, meaning local families often have to travel to shops along the main road or make the longer trip into Kitwe or Ndola to purchase basic necessities. By offering farm-fresh food and everyday essentials closer to home, the store could fill a practical need within the surrounding community while generating income for Mab's Haven.

Help Build the Mab's Haven Farm Store

Rather than funding an expense that must be paid again next month, this $4,200 investment can help create a source of income that continues giving back.

$4,200 can help turn this resourceful idea into a working business.

Your gift can help provide the materials and equipment needed to complete the shop and give Mab's Haven another important step toward greater financial independence.

Help Mab's Haven build more than a store. Help build a source of stability for years to come.
