Balavikasita was started and is operated today by a wonderful Indian couple who live in Hyderabad, India. Uttam and Shobha Kumar are a  married couple who were social workers. They were living a normal, middle-class life with their two children when one day Uttam spotted an 11-year-old girl sifting through a garbage pile in their neighborhood. 

 Not knowing what else to do, Uttam brought the girl to his own home where his wife Shobha bathed, clothed and fed the girl. She remained with them in their home.

After that Uttam began to see street children wherever he went and his conscience made him take them home. Soon their home was bursting with “found” children and they realized they had unintentionally started an orphanage. They rented a separate house to serve as their orphanage.

They now have around 70 children and have separated the boys in one building (a rental) and the girls in another building that World's Children supporters funded.
