The village of Athipet is situated on the Jawadhu Hills, a highland. The people live in small cottages with thatched roofs on the slopes of the hills. About 15% of the population have access to electricity and most of the adult population did not have access to education.
The Athipet Tribal Girls' Home first opened its doors in 1977 with 50 children. Currently, there are about 194 children in the girl's program. The home provides free shelter, food, and education to orphan, semi-orphan, and low-income girls from this community.
Most families have four or five children, and the settlements are densely inhabited. In tribal communities, girls are often wed shortly after reaching puberty. Education for girls is not widely accepted, so the Athipet administrators travel around educating families about the benefits of their children receiving an education.
Educating girls brings hope and health to the entire community!
