Sacred Heart Home for Girls

A place of dignity, opportunity, and hope in the hills of South India

High in the Jawadhu Hills of Tamil Nadu, the village of Athipet sits quietly among winding roads and scattered hamlets. Perched nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, this remote region is made up of dozens of small villages spread across the hillsides—places where life moves at a different pace, shaped by the land, the seasons, and long-standing traditions.

While the landscape is strikingly beautiful, daily life for many families in this region is marked by isolation and hardship. Most belong to indigenous tribal communities, where access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity remains limited. Families often live in small thatched huts, relying on subsistence farming that depends heavily on unpredictable rainfall. Even with long days of labor, income is uncertain, and many households struggle to meet basic needs.

In these communities, social and cultural challenges add another layer of difficulty—especially for girls. Education is often out of reach, particularly for young women, and early marriage remains common. Opportunities for growth and independence are limited, and many girls grow up without the chance to fully explore their potential.

Health care is also difficult to access in this remote area. With only limited medical facilities available, preventable illnesses can become serious, and families often delay seeking care. Awareness around health and wellness is still growing, and many live without consistent support or reliable resources.

It is in the midst of these realities that Sacred Heart Home for Girls was established—a place created to open doors where few previously existed.

Founded in 1977 by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, the home was built with a simple but powerful vision: to provide girls from these remote communities with safety, education, and the opportunity to build a different future. Many of the girls who come to the home are from low-income families, or have experienced loss, instability, or limited access to schooling.

At Athipet Girls Home, those barriers begin to shift. Girls are welcomed into a safe and nurturing environment where their basic needs are fully met—food, shelter, clothing, and care are provided freely. More than that, they are given the chance to learn, grow, and discover what is possible for their lives.

Education becomes the foundation for change. With consistent support, the girls are able to attend school, build confidence, and pursue opportunities that were once out of reach. Over time, families and communities begin to see the value of education more clearly, and a quiet transformation takes place—one that reaches beyond the home itself.

The work extends into the surrounding villages as well, where ongoing support, family visits, and community programs help encourage education, health awareness, and long-term development. Step by step, what once felt out of reach begins to feel possible.

At its heart, Athipet is more than a place to stay—it is a place where girls are seen, valued, and empowered to shape their own futures. It is where tradition and transformation meet, and where a new generation is given the opportunity to rise beyond the limitations they were born into.

Because when a girl is given safety, education, and encouragement, her future changes—and so does the future of her community.
